Can You Think Outside the Box?

Harvey Bernard Milk was not only a gay rights activist, but he was the first OPENLY GAY man to be elected to office in California. Mr. Milk was a member of San Francisco's Board of Supervisors for only eleven months due to his untimely death November 27, 1978. In the upcoming movie, Sean Penn depicts Milk and has received rave reviews for his role.

One evening I had a mini debate with my brother in regards to voting for a canidate who happens to be openly gay. He feels the world isn't ready for a gay official. However, I feel this option is definitely something which could happen in the near future and I would definitely vote for a canidate regardless of their sexual orientation as long as their qualified to handle such a position. We may not be ready now, but we could be ready sooner than later.

Would a canidates (i.e. presidential, congress, government, state or local) sexual orientation hinder your voting decision??

I definitely agree with you. MY decision would depend solely on their qualifications. It doesn't matter if the candidate is gay.

Ok sis, you got this one...

However, I still don't think America is ready for an openly gay politician. Maybe in local offices and precincts that represent a large gay population, but when it comes to the leader of the country, it may not happen in our lifetime.

I'm all for voting for the qualified candidate, but when it comes down to it, the American people fear what they don't understand. The fact of the matter is the majority still don't understand the gay community. You have religious nuts that think being gay is a sin, you have heterosexuals that are uncomfortable with gays, you have gays that don't support the cause or the movement (just like Blacks that don't support Obama). You might get a gay politician in a local office or even a state position, but to elect them as President of the United States of America, I don't see it happening in our lifetime. But hey, we got a Black man in, so I guess anything is possible!

I concur with The Feature...I wouldn't have a problem with an openly gay politician, long as he or she can get the job done.

HONESTLY I HAVE TO AGREE THE MAJORITY OF THE AMERICAN PUBLIC ISN'T READY FOR A GAY OFFICIAL... LOOK AT ALLT THE CONTROVERSY THAT OCCURS WHENEVER HOMOSEXUALITY AND POLITICS COMBINE???

ITS SAD THAT PEOPLE TRULY THINK THAT SOMEONE'S SEXUAL ORIENTATION COULD AFFECT THEIR ABILITY LEAD AND AFFECT CHANGE IN PEOPLE AND POLICY

I had to come back to this...

First off, I don't think people actually think that a homosexual couldn't run the White House, the Country, the World or hold an executive position in any other office. I also don't believe that anyone truly believes that a homosexual couldn't do the job as good as a heterosexual. It's not their capabilities or intelligence, but rather what they represent, be it good, bad or ugly.
